Corktown

Corktown residents and business owners will  gather Monday night to discuss new safety measures being taken in their neighborhood, WXYZ reports. The community meeting comes in the wake of concerns about car thefts and auto break-ins in the business district.

The community safety meeting is set for 6 p.m. at the Detroit IBEW building, 1358 Abbott St.

WXYZ reports that Detroit Police Chief James Craig is expected to attend.

On March 2, Craig announced some new efforts to crackdown on car theft after Deadline Detroit reported on the issue. On Saturday night,  March 1, four cars were stolen from Corktown --a chronic problem there and elsewhere in the city.

At the time, Craig said he would implement a new strategy to combat car thefts and break-ins in Corktown. He also announced a pilot effort in during peak crime hours in Corktown, downtown and Midtown: A roving unit will do visible patrols and respond to make out reports for such crimes as car thefts and break-ins.

In many cases, people who have had their car stolen have been stranded without transportation, and must figure out a way to get to a police station to give a theft report to police.

Business owners in Corktown urge customers to park in monitored lots rather than on the street.
