When it comes to high tech in baseball, some of us are still marvelling over the fact radar can be used to clock a pitch.
Things are changing.
Now comes Noel Perkins, a University of Michigan mechanical engineering professor who has patented a device that helps a batter improve his swing, according to Crain's Detroit Business.
Crain's Dustin Walsh writes that Perkins has already signed an option agreement to Pittsburgh-based Diamond Kinetics to bring that technology to market.
Walsh writes:
It works by attaching a sensor to the knob of a baseball bat or softball bat, which then transmits metrics to software developed by Perkins. The analysis helps improve a batter's swing.
Much of his research is being funding by Hillerich & Bradsby Co., the company behind the Louisville Slugger brand, and Rawlings Sporting Goods Co. Inc., Crain's reports. The first product will be launched in late 2013 or early 2014.
