Detroit Police started a major crackdown on street racing and other stunts Friday night, detaining more than 30 people and impounding 10 cars, which they intend to sieze permanently through civil forfeiture.

Officers set up surveillance near Grand River and Warren, following up on residents' complaints, WXYZ reports. Tickets carrying $1,000 fines were written for violation of the governor's social-distancing directives.

Police say they have tried to work with motor sports racers to provide a safe environment for these activities to take place in. However, they will not allow it on city streets.

"We're not going to tolerate it," said DPD Commander Darin Szilagy. "We're going to take your car, you're going to go to jail, and you're going to pay a heavy fine."

The relative emptiness of Detroit streets during the pandemic stay-at-home order has tempted street racers to take over the city's many wide boulevards. Heavy concentrations of circular tire marks can be seen on many of them. Last weekend, a "Sunday Funday" rally ended in tragedy as one driver crashed his car into a house. The car burst into flames, and the driver was killed.
