Update: A man and a women who were living in the home were arrested Friday, according to WDIV.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said two are both convicted felons but said more information would be released after an arraignment.

“A female has been arrested on a felony warrant unrelated to the case,” Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said. “A male was arrested and charged with being a felon in possession (of a firearm).”

Friday, 5:58 AM: The National Rifle Association is often fond of saying: "Guns don't kill people, people kill people."

Well, that was certainly the case late Thursday afternoon when a four-year-old girl discovered a long gun in a back bedroom of a home underneath a bed, pointed it at her four-year-old cousin and fatally shot him in the chest.

The tragedy was another sad commentary about a community that has far too many guns, and far too little confidence in its police force. Even the new police chief James Craig recently spoke out, encouraging law abiding citizens to have guns.

WDIV reported that three cousins were playing alone in the bedroom of the home when the incident happened. The grandfather was home at the time.

Neighbors wondered how such a tragedy could have happened.

"I ain't never known the old guy to have a gun or something. I didn't know," neighbor Dennis Queensbury told WDIV. "You got to be safe. He should have put it up or something so it should have been unreached by a child."

Police  expressed concern that the gun was not properly stored, and that the incident could have been avoided. -- Allan Lengel
