A Dearborn cop shot and killed a 31-year-old Detroit woman Wednesday after police say she tried to run officers over with her car in front of Fairlane mall on Hubbard Drive, Fox 2 reports. One officer has injuries that aren't life-threatening.
Dearborn police got a call from mall security after 4 p.m. about a woman acting distraught inside and outside the shopping center, Hannah Sanders reports for Fox 2. She tried to run over a security officer and nearly struck a security vehicle with her Chevrolet HHR, police say.
Responding officers saw her car fleeing from the parking lot, said Michigan State Police spokesman Lt. Mike Shaw, according to Fox 2. The Detroit Free Press reports that the woman was stopped in traffic on Hubbard Drive, and officers tried to approach the vehicle and arrest her.
Several Dearborn officers were outside of their cruisers when the woman tried to run them over, Fox 2 reports. One officer fired into her car.
“One police officer suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital,” said Lt. Shaw. "Where he currently remains."
"This is early in the investigation so we don't know if she was armed or unarmed," Shaw said. "She tried to run over police officers so yes, she used lethal force against a police officer with her vehicle."
