Dearborn Police said officers fatally shot a man suspected of setting a fire at a mosque and shooting at them early Saturday around 2:30 a.m.
Police on patrol spotted a fire at the Al-Huda Islamic Association at 8835 Warren Ave. in Dearborn, near the Detroit border, according to a police press release and Dearborn Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud.
The officers surveyed the scene and encountered an armed man who fired at them. Officers chased him as he ran south along Lonyo Avenue into Detroit and ordered him to drop his weapon, police said. But he shot again, and they returned fire, killing him. No officers were injured.
A task force comprised of the Detroit Police Department and Michigan State Police is investigating.
It's unclear what damage the fire caused. Dearborn Police referred reporters to Detroit Police, who referred them to Dearborn. Michigan State Police did not immediately return a phone call to Deadline Detroit.
“This was a tragic incident for our faith community and the Dearborn community overall that unfortunately led to a loss of life," said Dearborn Chief of Police Issa Shahin in a statement. "I commend our officers for responding with the utmost professionalism and courage to protect the community from imminent danger.”d
Dearborn Mayor Hammoud says he believes the man acted alone and there are no imminent threats or danger to other houses of worship.
