Kid Rock will not attend Friday's Detroit Music Awards ceremony in downtown Detroit due to the death on Monday of his assistant, Mike Sacha, delaying his distinguished achievement award until 2017, the Detroit Free Press reports
Sacha died in an all terrain vehicle crash on Kid Rock's Nashville estate. Kid Rock issued a statement saying he considered Sacha like family.
The Detroit Music Awards Foundation issued a statement:
With deep regret, Kid Rock and the Detroit Music Awards have decided that in light of the recent events it would not be appropriate for him to appear at the ceremony on Friday, April 29, to accept a Distinguished Achievement Award. The Detroit Music Awards Foundation (DMAF) will instead delay the presentation of the award to a future date, possibly during the 2017 ceremony or another event.
"We offer our condolences to the family of Mike Sacha and to Kid Rock and his organization at this terrible time," the DMAF Board said in a statement. "We certainly understand and agree that this is not the right time for a celebration. The Distinguished Achievement Award would only be a reminder of this week's tragedy rather than a commemoration of a significant career as an artist and humanitarian. We look forward to presenting the award some time in the future when it can be a positive, celebratory experience. We wish everyone peace and our best wishes."
The 25th Annual Detroit Music Awards will go on as scheduled at 7 p.m. Friday at the Fillmore Detroit, 2115 Woodward Ave., with performances by Tim Bowman Jr., Child Bite, Def By Stereo, Andrew Dost of fun., Jill Jack & the Detroit Women's Project, the Motor City All Stars, the Punks, Victoria Reed and all-star tributes to the late Glenn Frey and Marcus Belgrave. Distinguished Achievement Awards will be presented to Dan Yessian and Al Abrams.
