Democrats appear unwilling to budge on funding for a border wall despite a prime-time plea from the president yesterday.
The issue has led to a government shutdown, now entering its 19th day.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer gave their own address minutes after Trump spoke from the Oval Office, accusing him of "holding the American people hostage" and "manufacturing a crisis."
Detroit-area Democrats in Washington, meanwhile, took to Twitter to echo the sentiments of their leadership. Sen. Debbie Stabenow pointed out that Trump has shut down the government over a wall "the majority of experts and the majority of people do not believe will be effective." Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) boycotted the address. A roundup of responses can be found below.

This shutdown fight shouldn't be about politics. It’s about people. And it’s the American people who are losing. pic.twitter.com/Xj2W8V8sr4

Instead of listening to Trump’s rant which will most likely include many falsehoods, I think I’ll take some time to read this. #EndTheShutdown #BoycottTrumpPrimeTime #unapologeticallyMe pic.twitter.com/jg661bgnXD

The President manufactured a crisis 18 days ago and plunged our country into a government shutdown. Tonight, the President proved he does not care about pulling us out of the mess he created.

And here's a Michigan Republican suggesting that the country remains as divided on the issue as ever, and that there's no end to the shutdown in sight.
Nobody convinced anybody.
