A Showtime TV series called "Shameless" co-stars William H. Macy as a character without . . . well, what it says. Here in Michigan, a real drama stars disgraced ex-state Rep. Brian Banks and also can be called "Shameless."
The Detroit-area Democrat resigned Monday as part of a plea deal to avoid trial on bank loan fraud charges. It wasn't exactly his first brush with the law. He went into Wayne County Circuit Court to enter his plea with a resume of eight felony convictions from 1998-2004, mostly for bad checks and credit card fraud.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 17 for a misdemeanor and could get up to one year in jail.
On Wednesday, the shameless ex-lawmaker Banks sent an email to supporters inviting them to a March 6 fundraiser at Sinbad’s restaurant in Detroit, reports Jonathan Oosting The Detroit News. Tickets are $50 to $5,000 for a platinum sponsorship.
“Come and support a true fighter for the people as he launches ‘Banks FORWARD’ . . . his next move, as the work MUST continue,” says the invitation.
It’s not clear if Banks plans to seek re-election to the state House, another office or pursue a new role in politics, Oosting writes.
