In 2021, with vaccines available to all, Michiganders had hoped Covid would no longer dominate daily life and some sort of normalcy would begin.

Instead, the state has dealt with vaccine-resistant population segments and recorded more Covid deaths this year than last. Some popular restaurants and other businesses have shut temporarily because workers have tested positive.

On Wednesday, the health department reported a record-setting 25,858 new cases over two days, along with 338 deaths.

Now The Detroit News and others report that the state health department had tracked 13,943 deaths tied to the virus in 2021, compared to 13,034 the year before. The state will likely add hundreds more deaths to that total on Friday with its final report of the year, which will cover two days.

As of Wednesday, 63 percent of Michigan's population had received at least their first vaccine dose, the health department says, meaning more than 3.6 million people remained unvaccinated.
