A Detroit 8th grader says she was attacked at school with a box cutter, and the family says the school should have done more to prevent the incident, WXYZ reports.
Detroit Police are investigating the attack.
Quanaisha Allison tells Jane Park of WXYZ that she was attacked outside Ann Arbor Trail Magnet School at 7635 Chatham in Detroit on March 23 after receiving threatening text messages the night before that said another student wanted to fight her.
The station reports that Quanaisha says she alerted her mother right away and they told the school’s assistant principal. A counselor met with both girls Monday morning, and it seemed as if everything was fine.
But when school was letting out, Quanaisha says the other student approached her from behind, and Quanaisha says she pinned the other girl down to defend herself.
The girls mother and sister jumped in and the sister is the one who did the slashing with the box cutter, Quanaisha says. WXYZ showed a photo of cuts on her face.
“Sliced up my face with a razor blade and, like, punching my face and stuff. I really couldn't see. I had my eyes closed,” Quanaisha said of the attack.
Both Quanaisha and the other girl have been suspended for five days.
Racine Miller, the family’s lawyer, tells WXYZ the school should have done more and suggested the student could have been suspended for simply making a threat.
Miller says the other family could face charges.
Detroit Public Schools issued a statement, according to WXYZ:
Ann Arbor Trail is an excellent college preparatory school with a private school feel that values a safe culture and climate. In the incident referenced, staff worked with both girls and their parents on several occasions to quell a situation with students that began when they were enrolled at another school. Despite assurances by the girls that their differences were settled and agreements by parents they would work together to discuss their daughters' behavior, both girls nonetheless engaged in a fight that resulted in disciplinary action.
