Watch Where Detroit Industry Has Floundered, Art Scene Flourishes on PBS. See more from PBS NewsHour.
When Spencer Michaels of PBS' NewsHour came to Detroit recently to profile the city's art scene, painter Gilda Snowden was ready.
She peppered Michaels with some aphorisms about being an artist in gritty Detroit.
"A Bohemian can live where an animal will die."
Another one: "Artists make real estate."
Snowden continued: "Artists go into places that may not be so beautiful, but if you can go in and you can make your work, it's a great place. And we have always found places like that. The city is coming back. It can't help but come back. When you're down at rock-bottom, where else are you going to go?"
Snowden is among several Detroit artists featured in the 9-minute report that puts a flourishing, but under-appreciated, segment of Detroit in the national spotlight.
