A Detroit cop was shot in the leg Monday morning on the city's east side in what started as a traffic stop and turned into a gunfight, The Detroit News reports.
The officer received a grazing wound and was expected to survive. A second cop was not shot, but was injured, George Hunter writes.
The suspect was shot several times and is being treated at St. John Hospital, the same place the officers were taken.
The incident occurred at about 10:20 a.m. in the 20000 block of McCormick, near Interstate 94 and Moross. Police were checking out a car that matched a description of a stolen car.
“Once the first officers arrived, they observed a male and a female inside the vehicle,” Detroit Police Chief James Craig said, according to the News “The driver began to remove a handgun and tried to hide it in the vehicle.”
The woman jumped out of the car and started running, but was apprehended, the News reports. The male started driving off with officers in pursuit. He then jumped out of the car and started firing, striking one officer in the leg. Police returned fire, striking the suspect.
“If you respond with any deadly force, the officers will respond with deadly force," Craig said, according to the News. "Our officers face this danger every day.
