Gang members are among players on social media, sometimes using it as a tool to commit or boast about crimes.

In Detroit, some gangs use post Instagram photos of rivals they want killed. Detroit U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade tells WDIV's Kevin Dietz that some of the people whose photos have been posted have either been shot and wounded and killed.

One investigation found that of 10 people targeted in an Instagram list, only three escaped violent attacks. "Seven of them got shot, four of them fatally," McQuade says. "So there's a real gang war going on."

Law enforcement is keenly aware of the use of social media and has used postings as evidence, Dietz reports. They leave a digital trail for police. 

"In our trials, we've shown pictures of gang members holding guns and drugs with their gang colors, schemes on shirts," McQuade says
