Joe Gappy, owner of of Prince Valley Market on Michigan Avenue on Detroit's west side, has been offering free rides home for about a month now for those who spend $50 or more in groceries, reports Marnie Rich of the Detroit News.

RIch writes that Gappy wants to show people that Detroit isn't a food desert as some say, and that Whole Foods and Eastern Market aren't the only game in town.

“Detroit is known as a place where fresh food is not sold, but it’s not true,” Gappy tells RIch.  “The food desert label is really a myth.”

There's no planning ahead. Customers at checkout just tell the cashier that they want a ride home and the store will call Uber.

“I think because people didn’t believe it,” Gappy told the News. “But in the last couple weeks we’ve had 20 or so take advantage of it. I’m sure as winter comes, it will become very popular.”
