The mayor at Tuesday's briefing.

Saying the pandemic is "strongly on the decline" in Detroit, Mayor Mike Duggan announced Tuesday that 200 workers in the city's General Services Department, who primarily work on grass cutting, will resume work Monday.

In another positive sign, the mayor said there are only 16 patients at the TCF Center and predicted the 1,000-bed temporary field hospital may soon close. City hospitals have 100 empty intensive care unit beds and 500 empty hospital beds, he added.

The latest news came during the mayor's daily briefing, which disclosed that there have been 987 Covid deaths in Detroit as of Tuesday, a one-day increase of 39. (Detroiters account for 28% of Michigan's 3,567 lung virus fatalities since mid-March.)

Amid signs of hope, city workers will be expected to wear masks and obey safe practices for an extended time.

"We are going to be dealing with this risk in our community for another year and maybe longer," Duggan said. "People should be getting ready for that," he said.
