Overall, for a city that boasts of a comeback, the statistics are nothing to celebrate.
Detroit homicides, rapes and car thefts increased in 2016. On the upside, crimes including non-fatal shootings, carjackings, robberies, aggravated assaults, burglaries and larcenies dropped, according to preliminary figures, WWJ and the Associated Press report.
Detroit reports 302 homicides in 2016, up from 295 the year before. Rapes were up by 27 and vehicle theft by 500.
The jump in homicides isn't unique to Detroit. Chicago, for example, recorded 762 slayings in 2016 -- up 57 percent from the previous year.
Police Chief James Craig tells the AP that Detroit is “continuing to make steady progress” in cutting overall crime.
Crime is always considered one of the key factors in the livability of a city.
