In certain parts of Detroit crime is pervasive, and children are some of the victims.
Katrease Stafford of the Detroit Free Press writes:
The Detroit Free Press spent a year listening to Detroit’s children, trying to understand their experiences — as many face violence, trauma and instability. With help from a grant from the Solutions Journalism Network, we looked both in our own backyard and around the country for solutions that may help children deal with the "toxic stresses" in their lives. . . .
Nearly 14 children per day are victims of crime in Detroit.
The average age of the victim: 13. The most common crime: assault.
Those are the findings of a Free Press analysis of Detroit Police Department data, which shows that the agency investigated more than 33,000 cases involving youths up to age 17 from Jan. 1, 2009, to Sept. 9, 2015. And during that time, roughly 2 of 5 children — 43% — were victims of violent crimes such as homicide, sexual assault, aggravated assault and robbery.
