Thousands of streetlights in Detroit could be repaired starting this fall under legislation introduced by state Rep. Maureen Stapleton last week, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The bill, HB 5668, also known as the Municipal Lighting Authority Act, would create a lighting authority to oversee about $160 million in bonds to repair streetlights with broken bulbs, missing coils and broken wiring.
If the bill passes, and Detroit is successful in fixing its lights and repaying the bonds, it would allow cities such as Wyandotte, Clinton Township, Ann Arbor and Lansing to do the same with their city-owned lights.
"Who better to use it than the city that is in the greatest need? I can think of no better place to start than Detroit," said Stapleton, a Democrat.
