A sanctuary city is general considered one that limits cooperation with federal authorities when it comes to deporting or detaining immigrants.

Last week, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan made it clear that Detroit is not a sanctuary city and will continue to work with federal agencies as it did under previous presidents, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press.

Speaking to reporters Thursday at the Detroit Regional Chamber's 2025 Detroit Policy Conference, he reiterated that Detroit is a "welcoming city," mean it encourages and welcomes immigrants who are in America legally. .

"If you are in this country illegally, we should not be shielding you from ICE and federal enforcement, and the city of Detroit does not," Duggan said.  "We're not a sanctuary city."

Last November, Interim Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison made it clear that his department won't be involved in the mass deportation of immigrants President elect-Donald Trump has been advocating.

"The Detroit Police Department has a job to do, and our job is not immigration, and so we're not doing immigration enforcement," Bettison said during an appearance Saturday morning on the podcast, "Detroit in Black and White."
