A 25-year-old Detroit mom has been charged in a shooting in which her two-year-old son picked up an unsecured gun in the home and shot himself in the left leg. The boy was treated at a local hospital.
Armonie Cherece Mack has been charged with one count of second-degree child abuse, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said Saturday.
The incident happened Wednesday around 8:30 p.m. in the family home in the 16060 block of Liberal Street in Detroit.
“I simply do not understand why this is tough or controversial,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement. “I have been beating this drum that children should not have access to guns for over five years now. I have talked about this incessantly. Gun owners have a duty to safely store their weapons when children are around. They need to make sure that there is absolutely no way that children can get access. Full stop.”
Mack was arraigned Saturday in Detroit's 36th District Court where she received a $15,000/10 percent bond. Her probable cause hearing is on Dec. 29 and a preliminary exam is scheduled for Jan. 5.
