Jeff Sachs, an Oak Park High graduate who has become a world-renowned economist and expert on poverty, says Detroit, in order to flourish, needs to figure out how to help people in poverty and set clear, time-bound goals for creating a fair, prosperous and safe city for all, Crain's Detroit Business reports.
"There is a lot of poverty in Detroit and a lot of income in metropolitan areas," he said, according to a report by Sherri Welch of Crain's. "We just have to get our act together and understand we're one connected society. We can't go on like this."
"We're really good in the U.S. at the economics ... we're rich and produce a gazillion billionaire," said Sachs, director, Earth Institute, Columbia University, who is one of the world's leading experts on economic development, global macroeconomics and the fight against poverty,
But as a country, we're not good on social justice, "and we're dumb on the environment," he said.,
Sachs made his remarks during a chat with Kresge Foundation President Rip Rapson on Friday morning at "Detroit Homecoming," an event sponsored by Crain's Detroit Business that brings ex-pats back to Detroit to show them the progress in the city and to encourage investment.
