Don Nauss, who has served as the Detroit News' managing editor since 2007, announced his retirement Friday after a 43-year career in journalism.

Detroit News: A native of Pennsylvania, Nauss also worked for papers in New Jersey, Philadelphia, Dallas, Orlando and Los Angeles. In addition to a veteran newsman’s steady diet of tornadoes, plane crashes and politics, Nauss also covered the launch of casino gambling in Atlantic City, the savings and loan crisis of the 1980s and the Los Angeles riots following the Rodney King verdict.

Nauss came to Detroit to cover the auto industry, labor, politics and the Midwest economy for the Los Angeles Times. He then was recruited by The News, where he started in 1999 as auto editor. After several promotions, he took over managing editor duties in 2007, directing the day-to-day functions of the newsroom during troubled times for the newspaper industry, the auto industry and the city.

Nauss is expected to complete his tenure with the News by the end of the month. The paper has not yet announced a successor.
