A suspect allegedly involved in the Christmas Day murder of his wife and her 13-year-old daughter was killed by Detroit police Tuesday afternoon, Chief James White said at a news conference.

Dwayne McDonald, 62, was shot dead as officers executed a search warrant on an apartment in the city's North End on Owen Street, where he was believed to be hiding.

Officers opened fire after they announced their presence and heard a gunshot, White said, though he declined to say whether McDonald fired it. Two other people were with him at the time, but the suspect was armed, White said. One of the companions had told police where McDonald was.

The department and Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting to determine whether officers acted appropriately.

McDonald was one of three suspects in the killing of Elaine Fizer, 57, and her adopted daughter, Daunya Fields, who was also disabled. The pair were killed in their home.

Initially, police described McDonald as a person of interest they wanted to talk to, but he did not turn himself in.
