A Detroit police officer who was shot and wounded last week while pursuing a suspect on a crime spree, has died due to complications from his injuries, Fox 2 reports.

Sgt. Ken Steil, 46, died Saturday at St. John Hospital in Detroit, on the same day he was scheduled to be released from the hospital,  Fox 2 reports. He was the father of two children, 3 and 5.

Last Monday, Steil was pursuing an armed suspect named Marquis Cromer, 21,  in the area of Seven Mile and Hayes when the man opened fire with a sawed-off shot gun, striking him in the shoulder.

Authorities said that Cromer was on a crime spree that included shooting his father and another person.

Fox 2 reports that Detroit Police Chief James Craig, speaking outside the hospital, said Steil had the heart of a leader and told him: "I'm glad I took the round, because I would not have wanted any of you to take it."
