"Detroit," Director Kathryn Bigelow's film about the Detroit 1967 Riot and the Algiers Motel, opened this past Friday in 20 theaters around the country, including two in Metro Detroit, and grossed $365,455 -- an average of $18,273 per theater.

Annapurna Pictures tells Deadline Hollywood it's “happy with the results” and encouraged by its audience surveys.

"It played very well everywhere," Annapurna’s Erik Lomis says. "The best market was Detroit, which we expected. We were even more encouraged by the exit polls. The picture played 86% in the top two boxes and had a 71% recommend which is great."

The film opens in about 2,800 theaters Friday.
