The state Department of Natural Resources plans to spend $12.8 million take the massive Globe Building on Detroit's east riverfront and refashion it into a one-of-a-kind nature nature center.

The department and Detroit's Economic Growth Corp. said the move involves turning the vacant six-story building into an interactive learning facility. 

Once completed, state officials said they hope to draw up to a million visitors annually. DNR officials expect to see construction begin this fall and are eyeing a late 2013 opening.

"We want to get people excited about recreation in the out of doors," Vicki Anthes, head of the DNR's planning division, told the Detroit News. "A lot of our youth aren't playing outside the ways kids used to."
