Detroit native Chris Hansen, who made a name for himself in Detroit working as an investigative reporter at WXYZ and WDIV before heading off to New York, is leaving NBC, the New York Daily News reports.

Hansen was best known for his “To Catch a Predator” investigations on “Dateline."

"Chris has been a valued member of the team and we thank him for his many contributions to Dateline and NBC News over the last 20 years," the network said in a statement, according tot he Daily News. "We wish him the very best.

The Daily News writes:

The correspondent became expendible due to “Dateline's” increased reliance on narrative-driven, long-form stories, most of them murder mysteries,” according to TV Guide.

In a statement, Hansen said he is pursuing "hosting and executive producing projects that will be announced in the coming months." 

Hansen didn't immediately return a phone call to discuss his departure. -- Allan Lengel
