Move over Robocop!
Detroit has a new Kickstarter darling, and its name is Floyd.
The Floyd Leg is a Detroit-made set of table legs that can be attached to any flat surface. The steel legs come in two heights and two colors, so customers can create DIY desks, coffee tables or patio furniture from planks of wood or doors by simply clamping the legs on the surface.
Kyle Hoff and Alex O'Dell created a Kickstarter in January hoping to raise the $18,000 they needed to produce 400 legs -- enough for 100 tables.
As of Friday afternoon, they've raised $247,291 and sold 1,224 sets of four legs.
It's an all Detroit production, according to the Kickstarter page. Floyd Legs are manufactured entirely in Detroit from American steel.
Hoff explained to a local goods website called Remake Detroit:
It’s laser cut, formed, welded and powder coated.
The leg starts at a sheet metal fabricator, then it’s welded and powder coated at a different facility in Detroit.
The Floyd Leg duo also used materials from Detroit's Architectural Salvage Yard to create the tabletops in their promotional material, grabbing doors, windows and planks that had been reclaimed from structures around the city. Some Kickstarter backers will also be receiving tabletops from the salvage yard.
Despite the unpredicted success, Hoff and O'Dell still expect to be able to make all of the legs on time to deliver in April. "Wow," they wrote on the Kickstarter. "Luckily the project was flooded with support at the beginning of the campaign, which has given us plenty of time to prepare. We're working non-stop, and still set to meet our goal on time."
In fact, they've already started production.
The Kickstarter ends tonight, so customers wanting a Floyd table will have to act fast. Hoff and O'Dell have not announced future retail options for the Floyd Leg.
