Detroit Recreation Department Director Alicia Bradford has retired two months after the botched awarding of a contract to manage Detroit's four golf courses, Crain's Detroit Business reports.

Robert Snell of Crain's writes:

The golf management contract process earlier this year caused anxiety across the region because holdups threatened to delay the courses opening in time for spring golf season.

In late March, Detroit City Council awarded a one-year deal to Oakland Township-based Vargo Golf Co. after an aborted attempt by the city to award a 10-year contract to a new company, Motown Golf Management Group LLC. The city initially planned to award the golf contract to Motown but the plan fizzled following disputes among a rival bidder and and concerns over the length of the contract.

Vargo received the contract despite running up a $442,000 delinquent water bill.
