Legend has St. Patrick had the power to cast the snakes out of Ireland, but it took vaccines and a wearying fight to push Covid back far enough to allow his parade to go on in Corktown today.

The celebration of all things Irish starts at 1 p.m., proceeding down Michigan Avenue between Sixth and Fourteenth Streets. Temperatures will be just below freezing, but are projected to rise throughout the day.
"To be on hiatus for two full years just was really devastating, because we are one of the few, if not the only, nationality that gets to host a parade in such a busy roadway," (United Irish Societies chairperson Sheila) Cassidy said. "The founding fathers that developed and composed the Detroit United Irish Societies are, I'm sure, aglow that this is taking place again here in 2022."
Festivities began Friday, with a small ceremony marking the Painting of the Shamrocks on the street near the beginning of the route, at United Irish Societies Plaza at Sixth and Michigan. After the parade, Corktown bars and restaurants will be open for the usual celebrating. Do so responsibly, and keep in mind, if you miss the party today, March 17 is coming on Thursday, when the temperature will be in the 50s.
