Detroit State Rep. Joe Tate Says He Won't Run For Re-election

Democratic Detroit State Rep. Joe Tate, the former Michigan House Speaker, tells the Michigan Chronicle that he won't be running for re-election.

Tate, 45, told the publication in an interview with the Chronicle's Sam Robinson that he's not sure what’s next.

He said he's proud of his tenure as House Speaker. It was the first time a Black person served as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Tate led the Democratic caucus during its once-in-a-generation legislative trifecta from 2022–24, Robinson writes.
