Detroit Police Chief James Craig had good news for Detroiters today: the city has 16 percent fewer homicides than it did at this date in 2012.
The current total is 262, some 40 fewer than in 2012.
A little perspective:
New York City has 256 murders so far this year, a 26-percent decrease over 2012, according to the NYPD.
Detroit has about 700,000 residents. New York has 8.3 million, plus millions more in visitors and commuters each week.

Last week, improbably, New York recorded no homicides, according to the New York Post.
The paper reported:
Murder took a holiday last week.
There were no murders in the five boroughs in the seven days ending last Sunday, the mayor’s office said on Monday.
“It’s an anomaly. No doubt about it,” a veteran police source told the Post.
“The Grim Reaper took a break this week.”
The last time the city experienced a murder-free week was in the midst of a cold spell last January.
Overall, crime stats have been trending down so far this year.
