The Detroit Board of Education on Thursday approved a measure requiring Covid vaccinations for nearly 8,000 teachers and staff by February, The Detroit News reports:
According to district documents, "all employees (including new hires) must be fully vaccinated as a term and condition of employment by February 18, 2022. However, if employees request and are granted a medical or religious exemption from the vaccine mandate ... such employees must provide proof of regular testing for COVID-19 and wear face coverings."
Failure to comply with the requirements "will subject the employee to discipline, up to and including termination," the district said.
"People are moving to this in other school districts," board chair Angelique Peterson-Mayberry said earlier this week, according to Chalkbeat Detroit. "This is a step needed for us to avoid that interruption in the educational process.
Approximately 80% of district employees have already been vaccinated, according to district spokesperson Chrystal Wilson. The district employed roughly 7,900 staff members, according to data from the 2020-21 school year. ...
The district is also looking into the legality of a vaccine mandate for students, [Superintendent Nikolai] Vitti said, with plans for a potential fall 2022 deadline for students to be fully vaccinated.
