The real Detroit tigers are getting a new home, not the ones with the old English D who too often purred rather than roared in recent years.
The Detroit Zoo announces that the "ferocious felines" at the Royal Oak facility will soon have a renovated and expanded habitat, thanks partly to a $1-million gift from the Richard C. Devereaux Foundation.
The donation will give the animals more room with high vantage points, open spaces, trees, a cave, waterfall and pool.
“The Detroit Zoo is one of my favorite places on earth, and I think tigers are the most magnificent of all creatures,” Leslie Devereaux said in a statement. “It brings me great pride to be able to support both an organization and a species that I hold so dear to my heart.”
The Bloomfield Hills-based foundation supports education, health organizations, wildlife preservation, human services and public television.
