Anyone 16 or over is now eligible for Covid vaccinations at TCF Center in Detroit, a week earlier than planned, the mayor announced Monday.
"This is an important day in our city’s effort to get past Covid and get our lives back to normal," Mike Duggan tweets. "With Covid positive rates on the rise, it's crucial that we expand vaccination capacity."
At the same time, Detroit's Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair said the health department will offer Johnson & Johnson vaccine shots on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Northwest Activities Center at 18100 Meyers. As the city gets more J&J doses it will expand and days and hours.
Detroiters interested in an appointment for free shots can call (313) 230-0505 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. weekdays. Anyone working at a job site in the city became eligible last week.
One caller can book for multiple people who'll arrive together. The call-taker will ask for six pieces of information for each person: Name, address, date of birth, phone number, email, any allergic reaction to past vaccines?
A city press release notes that only the Pfizer vaccine is approved for ages 16 and 17, while Moderna and Johnson & Johnson have been approved for those 18 and older.
