Mallett joins Police Chief James Craig as deputy.
Detroit Medical Center executive Conrad Mallett, Jr. will join Detroit Police Chief James Craig as deputy mayor of Detroit.
The appointment was announced Friday. Mayor Mike Duggan is expected to elaborate on Mallett's role at a 2 p.m. news conference.
Craig will continue to serve deputy mayor of public safety and fill in for Duggan when necessary.
Mallett, a past state Supreme Court chief justice, has filled varied DMC roles since 1999. He also serves on the board at auto supplier Lear Corp. and was an aide to former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick during his first term. He's also a former Detroit police commissioner who in 2018 resigned 10 months into a four-year term, citing obligations at the hospital system.
