Over $32,000 has been raised for a west-side Detroit boy mauled by dogs while reportedly trying to protect his three younger siblings.

Deacon Ashmore had to undergo surgey to repair his calf and will likely be on crutches for weeks following the Monday attack, a GoFundMe seeking donations says and Fox 2 reports. It happened in front of the 12-year-old's family home on Taylor, near Dexter and Joy Road.

Deacon's father describes the response as selfless.

"He was just asking 'Hey Daddy is Kingston okay? Did Hensely and Coco make it back in the house okay? Is mommy okay?' Here is with a real serious injury and all he can do is think about other people," Peter [Ashmore] said. "And I think that just speaks volumes about the kind of young man he’s becoming."

The victim is a University Prep Academy sixth-grader. More than 540 donors contribute to the online fund drive started by a local pastor.

This is at least the third dog attack of a Detroit child to capture headlines since pit bulls killed a 9-year-old girl bicycling in the city's southwest in 2019, prompting charges against the dog owner and an ordinance aimed to minimize such encounters. Hundreds of bites are reported in the city each year.
