A Planet Fitness franchise group is expanding its footprint in the city.

As part of aggressive growth in Southeast Michigan, a local ownership group plans to begin construction on a 30,000-square-foot outlet in downtown Detroit at 1400 Woodbridge St. near the riverfront, reports Kurt Nagl of Crain's Detroit Business.

Work could start as early as February, theoretically. The Livonia-based owner hopes to open in May.

It will be the local company's third Planet Fitness in Detroit, where the others are at Wpoodward and 8 Mile Road and 18450 Ford Rd. near Dearborn.

"After 2017, we're still very bullish in the metro Detroit market," says Bryan Rief, co-owner of PF Michigan Group, the 10-year-old franchise owner. "We're looking to open four to five (new gyms) per year. Downtown Detroit is especially interesting to us and it's an area where we are going to focus our attention."

Rief's network has 35 Planet Fitness gyms statewide, including 26 in the Detroit area, and four in Ohio.
