It comes as no surprise that the greater downtown Detroit area is "more diverse, educated and wealthy than the rest of the city," John Gallagher of the Detroit Free press reports.

Citing a yet to be released report "7.2 Sq Mi" -- which is the square mileage of the area -- Gallagher writes that downtown Detroiters are wealthier than the city's inhabitant as a whole, but less affluent than the average full populations of cities like Minneapolis and Pittsburgh.

The report covers Midtown, New Center, Corktown, Woodbridge, Lafayette Park, Eastern Market and the east riverfront.

Katy Locker, vice president of the Detroit-based Hudson-Webber Foundation, told the Freep downtown is livelier than before.

"All of us who live and work downtown recognize that there are more folks on the streets than there were five years ago," she said. "I believe the numbers five years from now will be even higher, and we'll actually be able to document it."
