The Dan Gilbert owned Chase Bank building in downtown Detroit was evacuated Friday morning due to a fire.
According to the Free Press:
The blaze broke out just after 6 a.m. on the eight floor of the multi-story office tower on Woodward at Congress. More than 40 firefighters were called to the scene. Originally designated a second-alarm fire to call in extra crews, the blaze was downgraded to a single-alarm fire just before 7 a.m., Gassel said.
“It's under control,” Detroit Fire Department Senior Chief Larry Gassel said just before 7 a.m. “It's not as bad as everyone (thought).”
The 14-story building adjacent to Campus Martius Park houses a Chase Bank branch and other office space.
According to Click On Detroit, the fire originated in a freezer in the dining space, which is called the Q Zine in Gilbert-speak, merging the building's nickname "The Qube" with the word cuisine.
Paula Silver, Vice President of Comminications for Quicken Loans, said in a statement:
At 6:08 this morning a small electrical fire, resulting from an overheated refrigerator motor, was detected in the Chase Building’s cafeteria located on the eighth floor. Team members were safely evacuated immediately and the fire department was successful in containing and extinguishing the fire quickly. The building is open and back in operation, however the eighth floor will be closed for the remainder of the day.
