Detroit's summer of emergency management has a touch of movie-like symbolism as two normally refreshing sights are as dry as an empty treasury.

Hart Plaza's fountain awaits repairs the city can't afford and the General Motors Plaza fountain behind the Renaissance Center is idled for maintenance. There's no word on when either will spritz again, according to the Free Press.

Hart Plaza visitor Gabriel Lacey, a 27-year-old Detroiter, tells the paper: “The water should be on, because it gives a sense of life to the place. You want it to seem alive, not dead."

The metaphor of taps run run surely will attract photographers and filmmakers looking for a Detroit distress image to replace Michigan Central Station.
