Former Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans got a nice endorsement on Tuesday in his bid for Wayne County executive: Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.
“When I think in terms of Wayne County, the number one thing we need is emphasis on law enforcement,” Duggan said to about 60 people at a news conference at Evan's headquarters, according to a Detroit Free Press report by Marlon Walker.
“The truth is that every Detroiter is less safe today because of the early (inmate) release from Wayne County Jail and the short funding of the prosecutor’s office. And it’s critical that we get a Wayne County Executive who has experience to run a large organization and knows that the most pressing priority is we’re going to deliver law enforcement services.”
The endorsement is hardly shocking, considering that Evans had served as an assistant prosecutor under then-Wayne County Prosecutor Duggan. In 2001-03, Evans time as Wayne County Sheriff overlapped Duggan's time as prosecutor, the Freep notes.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy and other business, labor and religious leaders also let the public know of their support for Evans at the news conference, the Freep. reports. Worthy has been sharply critical of Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano for not fully funding her office.
