Former Wayne County Prosecutor Mike Duggan, saying he wants to fight a "sense of hopeless" in what he considers his hometown, said today he will take the next 90 days to gauge the community's interest in his potential bid for mayor.

In an interview this morning with The Detroit News, Duggan said that his goal is to seek a commitment of $5 million in fund-raising. He plans to hold various small "coffee groups" in the homes of 25 to 30 supporters over the next 90 days to meet and greet residents intrigued by his candidacy.

"I feel like this is my city," he said. "I was born here. I've worked here for the last 30 years. And I just think it's too great a city to let it go down the way it's going down."

Duggan, 54, filed papers Wednesday morning to create an exploratory committee to run for mayor, taking the first official step to raise and spend money to build a campaign staff. He called the move a legal requirement to hire staff.
