Detroit mayoral candidate Mike Duggan turned free publicity into more free publicity Thursday when he painted over graffiti messages that asked people to vote for him in August.
Duggan said to CBS:
“We are now spending campaign time going around and covering this up. This [graffiti] is not what we want,” said Duggan. “… I felt it was so important to deliver a message that we’re not going to run a campaign like this, and I wanted to be out here to cover up the first ones myself.”
Although this particular can of paint seems to be more advertising than issue-solving, Duggan's made a lot of noise about graffiti in 2003 when he was Wayne County Prosecutor.
“It’s not an act of art,” Duggan said in 2003. “It’s the ultimate act of disrespect. It says that they don’t believe the citizens of Detroit deserve better.”
