American Coney Island

When you talk about hot dogs in Detroit, you can't help but mention the iconic American and Lafayette Coney Islands next-door neighbors on Lafayette Boulevard in downtown Detroit. But others ares worth checking out.

Brenna Houck of Eater Detroit recommends 15 spots that include the two legendary coneys. A sampling:

Duly's Place, 5458 W Vernor Hwy, Detroit: With its narrow lunch counter and friendly, 24-hour service, this Southwest Detroit coney island classic oozes character. The hot dogs here have a satisfying snap and come dressed with the essentials — chili, mustard, and onions on a steamed bun. Consider ordering chili fries on the side. Duly’s is strictly cash-only, so hit up an ATM on the way.

► Mercury Burger & Bar, 2163 Michigan Ave., Detroit: Corktown's laid-back burger bar rounds off its menu of boozy shakes and poutine with five styles of natural casing and all-beef franks. Choose from options like the N.Y., N.Y. with corned beef, spicy mustard, and sauerkraut or the Murty-Bird with chicken-apple sausage, caramelized onions, and Dijon.

► Amar Pizza, 12195 Joseph Campau Ave., Hamtramck: Knoiwn for creative pizza flavors that use Bangladeshi ingredients. The restaurant also dresses up its halal hot dogs with those toppings. Think: tandoori franks with cilantro and onions or spicy ghost pepper sauce-slathered hot dogs.
