The removal of a 13-foot tree from the roof of the historic, long-vacant Metropolitan Building at 33 John R in downtown Detroit kicked off the start on Tuesday of the renovation to create the Element Detroit hotel, MLive reports.

The $32-million project will be for an extended-stay hotel under the Starwood collection and will include 110 rooms with kitchens, meeting spaces and stores.

The project is a joint venture between Detroit's Means Group and Roxbury Group. The Roxbury Group has also restored the David Whitney building, which has the Aloft Hotel and residential units.
