Ellen Degeneres did her very Ellen Degeneres thing for Detroit Thursday by surprising the Detroit Achievement Academy with $50,000 courtesy of the Ellen Degeneres Show and Shutterfly.

The Detroit Achievement Academy is a free, non-profit charter in school in Grandmont Rosedale that opened this year. The independently-owned school currently has 40 students in kindergarten and first grade and plans to add an additional grade level each year.

According to Hell Yeah Detroit:

This school, the Detroit Achievement Academy, not only provides technology but three meals and a snack for kids who “come to school on Mondays” often times hungry. They serve locally-grown food to the kids for these meals (the Northwest Detroit Farmer’s Market is in their parking lot) and teaches the students about the food, along with their academics. Class size is capped at 25 and is uses a “Expeditionary Learning” which is tied to Common Core Standards.
