The Tigers couldn't bring it home for the locals. Neither could the Lions or the Pistons or the Red Wings.
But Michigan State Spartans did the state proud on New Years Day in Pasadena with an impressive 24-20 victory over a tough Stanford team in the Rose Bowl.
State's tough defense stopped a last minute bid by Stanford, stopping the Cardinal team at 4th and 1.
Spartans were down 10 in the first quarter, but prevailed.
John Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News wrote:
The tougher team won the 100th Rose Bowl, and it wasn't Stanford.
The Cardinal, which used brute force and power football to become one of the nation's most successful programs, was outplayed at the line of scrimmage in a 24-20 loss to Michigan State on Wednesday before an announced crowd of 95,173.
