Ex-U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes
Gov. Rick Snyder has appointed retired U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Steven Rhodes to head the Detroit Pubic Schools as a "transition manager" as opposed to an emergency manager, The Detroit News reports.
Ingrid Jacques writes that Rhodes will handle most, if not all, of the duties previously assigned to Darnell Earley, who stepped down early, effective Monday. Rhodes oversaw the Detroit bankruptcy and was known as a no-nonsense guy who operated with a sense of urgency.
“The transition manager would fulfill the role of emergency manager under the laws,” says Snyder spokesman Ari Adler, quoted by The News. “But Judge Rhodes is anticipating his tenure ending on July 1 under the current legislation.”
The governor expects an appointed school board to take over after that, followed by a board elected in November to take office Jan. 1.
